Beyond the Drill: Newtown dentist champions sustainability and community wellbeing
An interview with Peter Samios, Marketing & Operations Manager
In the vibrant heart of Newtown, a dental practice is proving that caring for smiles can go hand-in-hand with caring for the planet and the local community. Founded in 2011 by Dr. Vicky Prokopiou, iDental Surgery has evolved from its beginnings in Burwood, moving to regional NSW and back to Sydney to become a cornerstone of holistic wellness in Sydney's inner west. More than just a place for check-ups, this nationally-recognised, award-winning[1] clinic embodies a philosophy of Complete Wellness Dentistry, extending its care beyond oral health to encompass the wellbeing of its patients and the environment.
For the iDental Surgery team, sustainability isn't just a trend – it's an integral part of their practice. Their journey began organically, influenced by the environmentally conscious ethos of the Newtown community and a personal connection to nature cultivated during their time in the country. "People in this area is very aware of their impact on the environment," explains Peter. "It felt natural that our business should reflect this as well."
This commitment translates into tangible actions throughout the practice. Where possible, reusability is key. Washable cups and towels are preferred, minimising the reliance on single-use items. Paper usage is deliberately kept to a minimum, with statements and reminders sent digitally, and even the manual disabling of a letter-sending feature. The practice prioritises procuring items that are recyclable or made from recycled materials, a conscious decision that extends to everyday consumables.
Perhaps the most impactful initiative is their partnership with TerraCycle. This makes the Newtown practice the area's only official public drop-off point for items typically deemed non-recyclable, such as used dental floss packs, toothbrush heads, and old toothbrushes. Through this paid program, the practice collects these items, earning rewards that are then donated to charity. Demonstrating their commitment further, they collaborate with a local resident who collects within their street and delivers the recyclables to TerraCycle.
The motivation behind these sustainable practices wasn't solely environmental. The practice also recognised the cost-effectiveness of reducing paper consumption and embracing reusable items. Moreover, the move towards sustainability was a natural progression for someone who values a holistic approach. This is evident in their positioning as a "complete wellness dentistry," offering comprehensive 90-minute first visits and 60-minute Recares that consider the interconnectedness of oral and overall health. This philosophy extends to partnerships with local businesses like the Papaya Clinic for gut health and Snap Fitness, as well as local collaborations with nutritionists and studios like Scout Pilates, fostering a network of businesses dedicated to wellbeing.
Implementing these changes wasn't an overnight process. Peter credits Dr. Prokopiou’s active involvement in the dental industry and continuous learning for identifying innovative and sustainable options. The discovery of TerraCycle, for instance, came from observing another forward-thinking dental practice.
Bringing the team on board involved a thoughtful approach during the hiring process, seeking individuals with an open mind. Dr. Prokopiou emphasises comprehensive in-house training, often starting from the basics, supplemented by online modules to ensure everyone understands and embraces the practice's sustainability ethos.
While their efforts are appreciated by environmentally aware customers who readily recognise the TerraCycle collection box Peter acknowledges that barriers to further change exist. Limited availability of clinically approved sustainable options that don't compromise patient care or quality remains a significant challenge. Regulatory compliance also restricts the reusability of certain items crucial for maintaining stringent hygiene standards.
Looking ahead, Peter envisions a future with a broader range of clinically sound sustainable products, stronger partnerships with local sustainability programs, and increased knowledge sharing within the dental industry. He believes that industry-wide standards and clearer frameworks for healthcare settings would be invaluable in facilitating greater adoption of sustainable practices. "Certain practices are allowable to make it reusable to reduce waste," he points out, emphasising that not everything needs to be "forever reusable" to make a significant difference.
Beyond their environmental efforts, iDental Surgery actively engages with the local community. Dr. Prokopiou mentors other dentists, spreading the word about sustainable practices. They also participate in school visits during Dental Health Week, educating young minds about oral health and the technology they utilise. Even everyday challenges, like managing FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) waste, are seen as opportunities for collective learning and improvement.
iDental Surgery in Newtown is a shining example of how a local business can integrate sustainability into its core values and operations. By embracing innovative solutions, prioritising clear communication, and fostering a culture of environmental awareness, they are not only providing excellent dental care but also contributing to a healthier planet and a more vibrant community. Their journey serves as an inspiration for other businesses to consider the small yet significant steps they can take towards a more sustainable future.
